Community Cleanse for Spring

April 10th – 17th, 2017 | $125

Ayurveda's gentle 4-step approach to seasonal cleansing is recommended twice a year: Fall and Spring.  As the seasons change, so must our habits.   Power of digestion is the vehicle to a healthy body and mind.   Join the Rasayana community for a self-guided 7-day Ayurvedic cleanse done from your own home and learn how to harness the power of your digestive fire. Upgrade your biosystems. Uplevel your habits for deep-tissue hydration and cellular repair.

"Agni converts food in the form of energy, which is responsible for all the vital functions of our body. Therefore, Ayurveda considers that Dehagni is the cause of life, complexion, strength, health, nourishment, lusture, oja, teja (energy) and prana (life energy).

A step-by-step manual provides timelines, grocery lists, recipes, and other resources for your detoxifying efforts. A recorded lecture provides insight into Ayurveda's perspective on nutrition. A private Facebook group (moderated by Kris) provides daily inspiration and a forum for your questions and concerns.  For the extra committed and curious, two traditional Ayurvedic bodywork & sweat therapy treatments are available at an additional discounted price:
Abhyanga (oil massage)$115 (normally $160)
Udvartana (herbal scrub) $150 (normally $180)

Pranayama is one of the most central yoga practices.  It is the fourth of the eight limbs in classical yoga and the prop on which the entire system rests.  Prana means vital force and ayama means expansion.   It is an integral part of Ayurvedic treatment methods and lifestyle recommendations - most effectively, in addressing symptoms in the respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems - and can be used therapeutically for all conditions of debility, low energy, chronic fatigue, or weak immunity.  Pranayama is also an excellent tool to counter depression, release grief and attachment, and reduce stress and tension in the physical body.

In this workshop series, we'll take a moderate 15-minute hike up Pine Hill (elevation 243 ft.) to Wright's Tower to enjoy beautiful skyline views of Boston, discuss the benefits of and then safely practice, a specific pranayama technique. Gross and subtle body anatomy, physiological and psychological effects, safety precautions and tips for developing a home practice will be discussed each week.
*MG Fitness members receive a $5.00 discount

Saturday, September 19, 2015

2:00 - 4:00 p.m. | $25

Ayurveda defines health not only as the absence of pain and physical symptoms, but the harmonization of all those factors that keep life going. And sleep is a big one. Problem is, quality, restorative sleep eludes so many of us.  Join Kris and Jana for this informative workshop and learn about some of the pharmacology behind commonly prescribed sleep aids Ambien, Lunesta, and Cinata - as well as with natural herbal approaches like Belladonna, Valerian root, or Chamomile. Find out common misconceptions of the use of these compounds and the contributive factors to insomnia. Other topics will include developing a good "sleep hygiene", the use of mantra and essential oils, and conclude with a guided pranayama exercise.

Introduction to Ayurveda

Saturday, October 25, 2014 | 2:30-4:30pm

Ayurveda is a holistic medical system native to India. Over 5,000 years old, it remains the oldest continuously practiced medical system in the world, sharing the same philosophy, language, and cultural foundation with that of yoga. It is the science of self-healing; the art of longevity; focusing on three mind-body principles known as "doshas".  Join Ayurvedic specialist, Kris Quinones, LMT, YT for this introductory workshop and get acquainted with yoga's sister science.  Recommended for the general ley person who is curious about Ayurveda and doesn't know where to begin.  Topics include Samkhya philosophy (the foundation of Ayurveda and Yoga); understanding how Ayurveda and Yoga are separate branches in Vedic knowledge, and where they overlap; identifying the (3) three doshas and their associated characteristics;
identifying which dosha(s) are more dominant in you.  $30 registration fee per person.

Snigda and Sneha
Saturday, October 25, 2014 | 7:00-8:00pm
Ayurvedic therapies often involve internal and external oleation of the body. In this workshop you'll learn about the benefits of and be lead through an Ayurvedic self-massage you can do at home that'll battle chronic fatigue and improve anxiety or insomnia. *Bring a swimsuit or old shorts & tank top, a large towel, and a small hand towel. Oil provided.  $30 per person registration.
Dinacharya - Daily Ayurvedic Rituals for the Modern Yogi

According to researcher Frank Scheer from Harvard Medical School, every cell of the body has an internal clock that regulates the body's metabolism. According to Ayurveda, these internal clocks are intrinsically linked to the rhythms of nature.  Yet our modern world - with electricity, TV, and fast food - has made it difficult to stay in synch with these rhythms, making us more prone to disorder and disease.  Kris will talk about Ayurveda's two 12-hour cycles of the day and what specific daily routines every yogi should know to stay in synch with them and optimize health.  In the second half of the workshop, she will lead you through a self-abhyanga - a balancing Ayurvedic oil massage.  *Bring a swimsuit or old shorts & tank top, a scarf/bandana, a large towel, and a small hand towel.  Oil will be provided.  $50 per person registration fee.
Anatomy of Yoga
Rotator cuff injury and inflammation is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. Made up of (4) muscles, (3) bones, and a network of tendons and ligaments, there are three common conditions that occur producing pain:  tendonitis, impingement syndrome, and a tear to the connective tissues or muscle fibers. Most people with rotator cuff problems can be successfully treated by a combination of rest, anti-inflammatories, and therapeutic massage though in more serious cases steroid injections or surgery is sometimes necessary.  In this workshop,  Kris spends the first hour lecturing on anatomy and common injuries to the rotator cuff, followed by  an hour vinyasa yoga class specifically sequenced for strengthening and lengthening this area of the body.  $30 registration fee per person.
